Ayyaz Ali Khan

Professor Ayyaz believes his biggest achievement in life has been to able to supervise / co-supervise 6 PhD and 26 M.Phil. students who successfully completed their degrees. He takes pride in the fact that 3 of his students are working as Professors; 8 as Associate Professor; 10 as Assistant Professors; 2 as Subject Specialist; and 4 as Senior Registrars in Dental Colleges all over the country and abroad.

He did his BDS from de’Montmorancy College of Dentistry, Lahore in 1980 securing third position in the University. He went to Zimbabwe in 1982; where he achieved the position of Senior Dental Surgeon; heading the dental services of Manicaland Province. He then went to Saudi-Arabia in 1987; the following year he was awarded the Charles Wallance Trust Award to do an M.Sc. in Epidemiology & Health Planning at the University of Wales in UK; which he completed with Honorable Mention in 1989. He came back to Pakistan and was appointed as Consultant Dental Surgeon at Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore in February 1990. While working at this institution he enrolled in a Ph.D. program with National University of Ireland and was awarded Ph.D. in 2001. Presently he is working as Professor Shaikh Zayed Postgraduate Medical Institute; he has been heading the Department of Oral Health Sciences for the last 26 years.Currently he is the CEO, Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research, 189-CCA, Sector DD, Phase IV DHA, Lahore.

He has been awarded Fellowships by Royal Society of Health and International College of Surgeons; and Membership of Faculty of General Dental Practice, Royal College of Surgeons. Recognized as a Ph.D. supervisor by HEC, University of Malaya and National University of Ireland, he is an examiner for almost all universities of Pakistan and the College of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan. He is also an Inspector with the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council.
Dr. Ayyaz Ali Khan has been the National Coordinator-Oral Health, Joint Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan and WHO Collaborative program from 2002 to 2012; during the same time he was the Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Punjab. He has also been the Convener, Expert Committee on Oral Health, Pakistan Medical Research Council (1996-2006) and was the team leader of the only national oral health survey of the country in 2004; this team presented the draft National Oral Health Policy to the Government of Pakistan the same year.

Having represented Pakistan on numerous occasions at international forums; he is a visiting Faculty at University of Faisalabad and Dow University of Health Sciences, has more than 120 publications to his credit and is a three time recipient of National Research Productivity Award by the National Science Foundation, Government of Pakistan.

He sits on the Editorial Boards of seven national and international dental journals; and has been the Associate Editor and the Managing Editor of Journal of Pakistan Dental Association. He has won national and international research grants of almost 10 million rupees; and has presented papers in over 60 national and international conferences. He has also been awarded Certificate of Merit by Federation of South Asian Dental Associations (SADAF) for outstanding contributions to the profession in the region. He was also the founding President of IADR (Pakistan Section) in 2011.

Professor Khan has had an in-depth exposure to large scale voluntary health initiatives as well. He initiated Shaikh Zayed Hospital Community Outreach Program; this was a pilot project for Innovation in health promotion and delivery of specialised health care at primary level in Pakistan. As Program Director he has been responsible for organizing monthly health promotion camps and delivery of specialised health care to the underprivileged population of the Kasur District. Earlier he served as a Co-Director of the Earth Quake relief efforts of Shaikh Zayed Hospital in 2005, where a 1500 bedded emergency hospital was established and treated thousands of affectees.
